The thesis analyses interactions between urban development, large-scale exhibitions, and contemporary art. Taking the 2013 European Capital of Culture Marseille- Provence as the case study for this thesis, the focus is on global art and its local impact. In particular, attention is paid to the changes in urban narratives wrought by events such as the European Capital of Culture. Both city governments and local inhabitants put forward new urban narratives.
